These are the daily realities that families impacted by disability wake up to every morning.
And while the whole world has experienced extreme health and economic crises as a result of COVID-19, children and adults living with disability have been hit the hardest. This global pandemic has exposed the devastating needs of these marginalized families in unimaginable ways.
In countries like Peru, which were already facing dire economic circumstances, coronavirus has made families’ worse fears come true. Parents have nowhere to buy or sell goods to provide for their children, and children wonder if or when they might see their next meal.
As the death toll rises due to COVID-19, children impacted by disabilities are no longer receiving necessary therapies or needed medical care. They are being pushed even further into the margins of life and their already frail bodies are succumbing under the strain. In their desperate search for clean diapers, sanitizer or soap, parents dare not even dream of the luxury of a wheelchair that would lift their little child off the cold, dirt floor of their one room home.
If 2020 has revealed anything, it has shown us the extraordinary needs of families struggling with disabilities, and it has taught us that we need to do more.
This year, with the burdens of disability and a global pandemic looming large, Joni and Friends is dedicated to doing more… more than just delivering wheelchairs.
Working with our in-country partners, we’re demonstrating the tangible expression of God’s love for children with disabilities by providing Christ-centered care for their whole families. We are on the front lines sharing the Gospel and showing families the love of Jesus as we meet their most vital practical needs – providing basic medical care, food and essential hygiene supplies, mobility support and ongoing therapy.
Whereas fear might motivate others to trample on the least of these, we as Christ followers can show our true colors at such a time as this.
