National Stroke Awareness Month

My friend Katherine Wolf was only 26 years old, with a promising modeling career and a new baby at home, when one morning… her hands, arms, and legs went numb. Katherine dropped to the floor, unable to speak or call out for help. Thankfully, her husband Jay was home and was able to immediately call 9-1-1. Katherine had suffered a massive brain stem stroke and was rushed into emergency brain surgery. Doctors weren’t sure that Katherine would make it, but God had other plans.

Today, Katherine lives with severe double vision, partial facial paralysis and deafness, and a lack of right-hand coordination. And with her faith firmly rooted in Jesus — and the love and support of her family — Katherine is sharing her story to encourage people affected by disability through her ministry, Hope Heals. What’s more, the Lord has opened doors for Katherine to be a beacon to those who may be unaware of the signs of a stroke. Not long ago, she was featured in a campaign of the American Stroke Association that highlights the common signs of a stroke with the acronym “F-A-S-T”: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech Difficulty, and Time to Call 9-1-1. It’s a great mnemonic that could help you save someone’s life. So being that this is National Stroke Awareness Month, let me encourage you to memorize “F-A-S-T.” Because as Katherine and Jay will tell you, you can never be too ready to help a friend or loved one in need.
