Square Dancing with Jeremy

Square Dancing with Jeremy

Even though it has been awhile since I returned from Mission Springs Family Retreat, there is one memory that still brings a smile. It happened during the wheelchair square dance. Now you have to picture this: Fiddle music playing at the basketball court and dancers in western garb forming their squares. My dance partner was a 20-year-old, blind, young man named Jeremy. Me in my wheelchair and this young man who couldn’t see?! Risky? You bet! I urged Jeremy to lay aside his cane and hold onto my wheelchair handles.

It didn’t take long before we were alamanding left, circling right, swinging, swaying and do-si-doeing back home. It was a hoot! I know that Jesus said, in Matthew chapter 15, “If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit,” but He didn’t say anything about a quadriplegic leading a blind man. Seriously, it was one of those moments when I just felt the pleasure of God! It was a family celebration night rejoicing in the goodness of God… no one complaining; no one feeling sorry over what they couldn’t do, but everyone embracing the joy of what we could do. That’s how it is at Family Retreat. Friend, join the fun next year, and keep an eye out on our website for the 2018 schedule. Then, get signed up. There’s always room for one more square on the dance floor!
