Sorrowful, Yet Rejoicing

A thickly wooded forest with fog creeping in above it.

“As servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing….”

2 Corinthians 6:4, 10

Jesus was “full of joy,” and yet Isaiah called him “a man of sorrows.” How is it possible to experience both emotions at once? Well, think of your own experience. Often, joyful moments coincide with difficult ones. Like, a father stands at the altar and sighs deeply as he gives his daughter’s hand in marriage. A woman finally lands that long-coveted job, but in taking it she must leave behind friends in the town she loves.

A mother watches her son languish behind prison bars, but she sees how the experience is bringing her rebellious boy to repentance and salvation. Second Corinthians 6:10 describes this strange conundrum; for it says we can be “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing.” Your deepest most profound moments may well be the hardest, yet happiest. It’s just another way you can identify today with your wonderful Savior.
