Samuel in a button up(This post is written by our guest blogger Samuel. Samuel is 17 years old and has autism. He recently learned to communicate through a letter board. Learn more about Samuel by reading his other posts.)

Now that I can communicate, I am able to serve the Lord, and others, in ways I couldn’t have in the past. When you have a disability you usually need a lot of help. I still need help every day to do basic tasks, but I am so thankful my parents always made a way for me to help others, too. Some people might think it would be fun to have people helping them do everything. It’s not. It’s no fun knowing how to do something, but my hands won’t do it. Instead of telling me how to do something over and over again, it is helpful to demonstrate and recognize that I understand. It would be helpful to try to teach your loved one self-help skills even though it might be easier to do it yourself. Also, if they are not catching on to something move on to a new task. I believe we all want to do things for ourselves even though it doesn’t seem like it sometimes. God wants us to serve others. Jesus was the greatest servant of all. It is a blessing to have a healthy body and mind to be able to help others. It is also a blessing to be used by God through weakness to help others!

Come back on Wednesday to learn more about how Samuel is serving God.
