Rock Your Socks for World Down Syndrome Day!

World Down Syndrome Day is fast approaching! Every March 21st people all over the planet celebrate World Down Syndrome Day – a global opportunity to raise awareness about Down syndrome and showcase all of the amazing ways people with Down syndrome make the world a better place.

Down syndrome is also known as trisomy 21 because people with Down syndrome have a third copy of their 21st chromosome, hence the celebration on March 21st or 3/21.  And something that is fast becoming a tradition on March 21st is the wearing of unique, brightly colored socks.

That’s right! Folks are encouraged to wear fun, patterned, and even mismatched socks on World Down Syndrome Day in order to start conversations centered around the inherent value of individuals with Down syndrome. The idea is that when we get asked about our wild socks, it’ll be our opportunity to start talking about the unique gifts God has given people with Down syndrome, as well as the need to accept and include people with Down syndrome in our churches, schools, neighborhoods… everywhere!

Here at Joni and Friends, you better believe we’ll be rockin’ our socks on March 21st! And when people ask us about our unusual attire, we’ll be happily sharing what’s up with Down syndrome. More than that, we’ll be using the opportunity to spread the Gospel, too. Because we’ll also be sharing the truth about Jesus and how He sees people with Down syndrome – as His beautiful image bearers (Genesis 1:27).

We sure hope you’ll join us and show off your crazy socks on March 21st in honor of World Down Syndrome Day. And when you attract attention and get people talking about your socks, make sure to showcase all the abilities and accomplishments of individuals with Down syndrome – and let your silly socks start a conversation about Jesus.

Take a photo of you and your friends rocking your socks, and tag Joni and Friends on your Facebook and Instagram posts, will you? We can’t wait to see your pictures and hear your stories of how the Lord used your socks to uphold the worth of our friends with Down syndrome and make much about Jesus!
