God’s Hedge

HedgeWhether in the hospital or home, the four walls of a sick room can be so confining. I know that firsthand – there’ve been times I’ve been bedridden for months. Now, one could be tempted to cry out with Jeremiah, “He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains,” or groan with Job, “Why is life given to a man… whom God has hedged in?” Feeling walled in, feeling hedged in can be confining; but it’s also comforting. Why? Because those are walls God put around you; God put up the hedge. It’s only when we view our restricting circumstances as being placed there by God’s own hand that we can find courage to face them. Walls are cold. Hedges are thorny. But for those who believe in the wisdom of a God, even a terrible thing can build trust. Remember, when the hedges and walls are high, it forces you to look up.
