Opposite Colors

Thick covering of leaves with a little glimpse of the sun glimmering through.

“I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things.”

Isaiah 45:7

As an artist, when I want to highlight a certain part of my painting, I always use colors that are opposites on the color wheel. If I want to draw attention to, let’s say, the legs of a yellow palomino horse, I will outline his hocks and hooves in purple. Immediately, the contrasting colors create a buzz on the eye, saying to the viewer, “Look here!” And, you know, the same principle works when we have a godly, grace-filled response to our dark suffering.

The contrast of our smile against the backdrop of affliction says to others, “Look here! Look at God’s grace at work!” God delights in creating contrasts; he even says in Isaiah, “I form the light and create darkness.” So today, if you find yourself in a dark, difficult circumstance, invite the Lord to brighten your countenance. It will say, “Look, isn’t God’s grace amazing?!”
