Natural Disasters

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. It seems not a week goes by that I’m not hearing about lives lost in a hurricane, earthquake or wildfire. Natural disasters always cause brutal suffering. And we can’t help but look to God and wonder why he did not stave off such tragedies. Well, in Luke 13 Jesus comments on a natural disaster that killed people in Jerusalem, he said, “…those who died – do you think they were more guilty than all the others living? No, but unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

Rather than suggesting a cause for calamity, Jesus responded by issuing a call to repentance. He made people focus on their souls instead of assigning blame for the suffering. So, friend, look at natural disasters as God’s wake-up call. He’s sounding the alarm and reminding you that life is short and fleeting. Ask yourself, “Am I prepared to meet God, if I lose my life today?”
