National Read a Book Day

It’s National Read a Book Day! Although I cannot physically curl up in a cozy corner with a cup of tea and a book in my lap, I’m still a fan of National Read a Book Day.

I’m totally behind celebrating reading and encouraging everyone else to get immersed in a really good book!

Years ago, I would read in the same way as watching TV or turning up my favorite radio station. But now, reading is much more than a way to pass time. Like when I’m in the hospital, or stretched out flat in bed with a pressure sore? Reading allows me to be discipled in the Christian faith, no matter where I am.

I typically read pretty quickly, but when I’m working through a theologically rich book like Spurgeon’s sermons or one of Alan Redpath’s studies, I move a lot more slowly, taking time to jot notes, reread choice paragraphs, and memorize heart-grabbing snippets. I want to soak up what these Christian saints have to teach me.

I’ve spent years absorbing the essays of Amy Carmichael or the Puritan prayers, such as those in A Valley of Vision. Yes, the phrasing may be a bit antiquated, and some nouns and verbs, unfamiliar, but it’s worth the effort to “sit under” the solid teaching of godly men and women from past generations.

Are you looking for a good read? Consider A Chance to Die: The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael by Elisabeth Elliot or Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God by Timothy Keller. Or, you can pick up a copy of my current read, The Chronicles of the Kings by Lynn Austin, or any of the fine books in the Joni and Friends store.

But my most important recommendation for this National Read a Book Day? Pick up your Bible! I have never once regretted the time I’ve spent reading my Bible. This month, Ken and I will wrap up our time in the Old Testament with our Chronological Bible Reading Plan, and then we’ll finish out the year in the New Testament. It’s been an astounding journey, and we’d love to have you join us now… or sign up to read with us again in 2019!
