In Haiti, a country faced with ongoing challenges of political turmoil and poverty, Josleen’s mom was forced to transport her daughter in a wheelbarrow. She did her best to make it comfortable for Josleen, but a wheelbarrow is meant for dirt, not people…

A wheelbarrow is meant for dirt, not people…

Josleen was in desperate need of a properly fitted wheelchair. Although she is 16 years old, she is so thin and frail. When Josleen and her mom arrived, they were led inside the church where Joni and Friends was hosting an outreach.

When the Wheels for the World team carefully lifted her out of the wheelbarrow and placed her, for the first time, in a seat of dignity, Josleen’s life was transformed.

People with disabilities in countries like Haiti are not used to being interacted with, touched, spoken to, or even looked at. They are typically neglected. Here’s a young girl who’s been ignored by society, never experiencing those simple human interactions or even receiving a smile from others.

Josleen was able to hear and know that Jesus loves her and created her for a purpose.

A Haitian pastor came over to Josleen and her mom and gave them a Bible in their language. He shared the Gospel with them for the first time. Josleen was able to hear and know that Jesus loves her and created her for a purpose. And her mom was able to hear the comforting words from Psalm 139:14 that her daughter is “fearfully and wonderfully made” by Jesus.

There are thousands more disabled children like Josleen waiting. The need has never been greater than now! People with disabilities in developing nations have so little – countless numbers of physically-impaired children live without basic medical care of any kind, without mobility, and without a trace of help or hope in sight.

This Christmas, give the perfect gift—a wheelchair wrapped in the Gospel.
