Dear Kids’ Corner,

I was wondering what’s the reason for the braces on Joni’s hands?

Dear Melissa,

Thank you for writing to us with your question! Joni wears braces because her muscles can’t do their job. When we have healthy arms and hands, our muscles keep our bones in the right place. But sometimes our muscles aren’t strong enough. This can make bones begin to curve or part of the body begin to droop. Lots of people use different kinds of braces to help their bones stay where they need to be. There are back braces, neck braces, leg braces, and even finger braces! They all help bones stay where they need to.

Joni wears braces on her arms to do some of the job her muscles can’t do anymore. They help protect her hands from flopping and getting hurt. They also allow her to do things like push buttons in elevators or feed herself. Do you have a question for Kids’ Corner? Write to us at [email protected].
