Tell Me the Old, Old Story Hymn

Kate had been sick for a long, long time. She’d traveled all the way to Africa and back to help her brother as a missionary, and now she could barely get out of bed. All that time in bed gave her lots of time to think. And what did she spend so much time thinking about? Stories! Well, actually, just one story. A story she called “The Old, Old Story.” As she lay in bed, she wrote a poem 100 verses long about the Story. Can you guess what that Story might be? Here’s a hint: Her long poem was used to make two hymns, “Tell Me the Old, Old Story” and “I Love to Tell the Story.” The first verse of “I Love to Tell the Story” goes like this:

I love to tell the story
Of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory,
Of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story,
Because I know its true;
It satisfies my longings
As nothing else would do.
I love to tell the story,
‘Twill be my theme in glory
To tell the old, old story
Of Jesus and His love.

Some people might think that Kate would get upset that her missionary work to tell people about Jesus left her so sick she couldn’t get out of bed. But the words to her poem show that she loved telling people about Jesus and His love, even when she got very sick. Are you sick a lot? Sing one of Kate’s songs, and be encouraged!
