Hunger For Righteousness
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
Ask a veteran high school football coach what kind of young man he most enjoys training. Surprisingly, it may not be the five-star athlete who’s loaded with natural abilities. In fact, it may be a kid with some good basic skills—coupled with a strong hunger to learn and get better. Sometimes the boy with all the talent thinks he’s got it down already, maybe imagining he can cruise through practices and rely on his gifting rather than on hard work. In short, he doesn’t want to grow. I think that’s the thought behind Jesus’ words in today’s Scripture: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
Are we hungry to do the right thing? Do we wake up with a deep-down longing to please God and a genuine fear of grieving Him? A lack of hunger for righteousness reveals we have stopped growing, which may mean we’re slipping backward.
Lord, there’s so much about me that needs to change—and I want to work with You to change it! Forgive me for imagining I can approach a new day on cruise control, relying on the grace, wisdom, and strength You gave me yesterday. Create a deep-down hunger in me to know You better and follow You more closely.
