Heaven is Not Boring
“Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.”
Colossians 3:1-4 (NLT)
Being in heaven with our God will never—for one instant—be boring. Here on earth, wired as we are to live in space and time, just about anything that goes on for a while has a boredom factor. Even a great vacation at a beach resort with perfect weather and all the amenities has the potential to feel empty if it goes on too long. Not so with heaven.
Eternity is not boring changelessness, because that implies a passage of time. Eternity is timeless; time doesn’t “pass.” Words like trillions of years have no meaning there. Eternity simply is. We are wrong if we imagine heaven as wispy, thin, and vaporous. No, it is earth that is like withering grass, not heaven. Heaven will be more vital than anything we have ever experienced on earth. Our relationship with God will be dynamic, enthralling, ever-new, infinitely expanding, and pushing into new dimensions of joy, peace, fulfillment, and intense satisfaction.
Father, I’m so thankful that You instructed us to set our sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand, and to think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. You not only give us permission to dream about the next life, but You also command it!
For the past twenty-five years, Heaven has inspired us to live well on earth even as we long for eternity.
Drawing on Scripture, Joni Eareckson Tada answers the deepest questions of our hearts about what heaven will be like, who we will see there, and who we will be there.
