Hands-On Ministry in the San Francisco Bay Area

Trusting in God’s great love and taking refuge in him can be difficult for families living with disability. Especially for Heidi, who felt isolated and alone before COVID-19, but even more so once shelter-at-home orders were put in place.

Heidi is a single mother. Her son, Junior, has multiple and complex disabilities including cerebral palsy, chronic lung disease, and severe seizures. As Junior’s primary caregiver, perhaps Heidi’s biggest challenge is the unpredictability of his numerous medical issues. She is constantly on alert, knowing that at any moment Junior may need to be rushed to the emergency room.

When Family Retreat had to be postponed due to coronavirus, our Joni and Friends Bay Area staff switched gears and hosted their first Family Retreat at Home. Heidi was overwhelmed when she received the wonderful news that her family was being blessed by a full scholarship so she and Junior could participate in Family Retreat at Home.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect from meeting virtually and thought it would feel impersonal, but from the first night to the end of the week, our family was part of a real caring community and to my surprise, the week was even better than what I expected,” shared Heidi. “God knew exactly what my soul needed, and I’m thankful to Joni and Friends for walking through the global pandemic with us.”

“Encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today.’”

Hebrews 3:13

Families all over the Bay Area – much like Heidi and Junior – are being strengthened and encouraged by Family Retreat at Home and the many support groups offered by our Joni and Friends Bay Area. And you can be part of all that God is doing in and around the San Francisco Bay area, too!
