God’s Gift to Anne

HymnalAnne had every reason to feel sorry for herself. When she was a baby, her mom died. When she was a teenager, she fell from a horse and became disabled. That seems like enough hard things for any girl, but there was still more. The day of her wedding, the man she planned to marry died. How could one person handle so much? For Anne, she handled it by taking her hurts to Jesus. Over and over again, she looked to God and remembered that God was in control and that He loved her. As she focused on God’s love and Jesus’ death on the cross, she began to write hymns. She wrote more than 150 hymns! When she gathered her hymns so that others could use them, she chose a special name for herself: Theodosia. That is a name meaning God’s gift. Anne’s life didn’t get magically better, but she knew God had given her what was best for her. As you get ready for Good Friday and Easter Sunday, read through these words she wrote:

To our Redeemer’s glorious Name Awake the sacred song! O may His love (immortal flame!) Tune every heart and tongue.

His love what mortal thought can reach, What mortal tongue display? Imagination’s utmost stretch In wonder dies away.

Let wonder still with love unite, And gratitude and joy; Jesus be our supreme delight, His praise our best employ.

Dear Lord, while we adoring pay Our humble thanks to thee; May every heart with rapture say, “The Savior died for me!”

O may the sweet, the blissful theme, Fill every heart and tongue, Till strangers love Thy charming name, And join the sacred song.
