Some of these have been used for a long time by people who use TTY machines. What is a TTY machine? We’re so glad you asked! TTY stands for teletypewriter. It is a machine that enables people who can’t talk or hear to use the telephone. Once connected to a phone line, people can type messages back and forth to each other. If someone needs to use a TTY machine but is calling someone who doesn’t have one, usually they can call a Relay Service where someone will read the messages the first person types to the second person who can hear. While a lot of the typing short cuts are similar, maybe you can teach your friends a few TTY short cuts that are not used normally in texting.
