Delighting in Hardships
“That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
2 Corinthians 12:10
It’s one thing to muster a submissive attitude toward God when we bring troubles on ourselves, but it’s a different matter when we’re hit with circumstances over which we have no control. These are the hardest to deal with. In today’s Scripture, however, Paul writes, “That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Yes, this was a man who went through a mind-bending series of trials in life. And he didn’t bring any of them on himself. Yet he could write that he delighted in these hardships, because he knew it was for Christ’s sake. He was walking in the Lord’s will and following the Lord’s directions. The first thing out of his mouth when he was blindsided by troubles was essentially this: “This is for the Lord’s sake. He is with me. I can deal with it.” And so can we.
Lord God, for the sake of Your Son, Jesus, and for the sake of my friends and family watching me—as well as for the sake of the holy angels, who carefully observe our responses—I give You praise today in the midst of my hardships. I know I am walking in Your will, so I know You will bring me through today.
