Celebrating the Life of Elisabeth Elliot
Today, a great saint has gone home to be with the Lord: Elisabeth Elliot. And with her passing, I cannot help but thank the Lord for what a positive impact Elisabeth was in my life. You may remember her as the wife of her first husband, Jim Elliot, who died in the late 50s after Auca Indians speared him and four other missionaries to death. Elisabeth remained in Ecuador for seven years, serving the very people who killed her husband. Over the years, she wrote 28 books, including her famous Through the Gates of Splendor (if you haven’t read it, I encourage you to find it online or at your local bookstore). But it was her example of perseverance through a significant disability that has most inspired me in these recent years. As her health worsened due to dementia and other complications, Elisabeth’s faith never waned. And though today she is no longer on this earth, Elisabeth’s books, years of service and teachings continue to equip God’s people for works of service. I pray that you, too, will be encouraged by the life of this remarkable woman.
