Brittany Serves in Uganda

Brittany Serves in UgandaHave you ever felt like you weren’t quite cut up for something? My friend Brittany is in her late 20’s and on weekends, she helps me get up in the morning. On weekdays, though, she works as an occupational therapist (OT) in a child-development center not far from where I live. Because she’s trained to work with disabled kids, I had been encouraging Brittany to go serve on a Wheels for the World outreach. But Brittany was a little concerned. I mean, helping American kids with motor disorders is one thing, but helping severely disabled children in impoverished nations is quite another. Besides, Brittany is an occupational therapist, she normally doesn’t fit kids to wheelchairs; that’s the job physical therapists do.

Still, Brittany prayed about it and shortly after learning that her church was partnering with our Wheels for the World outreach to Uganda, she signed up and joined the team! While in Uganda, Brittany was paired with Veronica — a seasoned physical therapist who has served on many Wheels for the World trips. Right away, Veronica got to work, training Brittany on how to measure a child’s hips, the length of his legs; how to select the right wheelchair, how to adjust the foot pedals — you name it. After one wheelchair fitting, Veronica turned to Brittany and said with a smile, “okay, Britt, you’re on your own!” At first, my young friend hesitated, but seeing the great numbers of kids with disabilities, and only a handful of trained professionals, she dove in.

Before she knew it, this young OT was fitting kids into wheelchairs like a pro! What’s more, she was thrilled to share the Good News of Jesus with these special needs families. It turns out, Brittany had nothing to be afraid of! So, friend, may Brittany’s experience encourage you to let go of any doubts and sign up for an upcoming Wheels for the World trip. Whether you’re an OT, PT, or nurse, you have professional skills with disabled people, and you can make a world of a difference in the life of a child or adult in need of a new wheelchair. Even if you’re not in the medical field, we need you! Our teams also consist of people with skills in photography, administration, writing, mechanics… plus, we could always use more prayer warriors on the team!
