I was on my way to the airport when a car suddenly veered in front of us on the freeway. Ken slammed on the brakes, my chest restraint snapped, and my body tumbled forward. I landed on the floor! We quickly pulled over, and Ken carefully lifted me back in my wheelchair. Breathless and...

“For My Daddy Showed Me So...”

Several years ago, Nancy wrote to tell me the deep struggles she and her husband wrestled with over placing their severely handicapped son, Brad, in a residential facility. Should they bring him home? Did the family have enough support? I tried to give the family some tools to make those critical...

Wise Singing

The other week during Sunday worship service, I was singing, “Take my voice and let me sing; always, only, for my King... Take my silver and my gold – not a mite would I withhold... Take my will and make it Thine – it shall be no longer mine...” Suddenly I was jolted, What in the world am I...

When God created the world, He spoke it into being. When Jesus walked the earth, He spoke and the lame were healed. When Peter preached his first sermon, he spoke and thousands were gathered into the kingdom. Powerful things happen when we speak. Our words can either accomplish great good...

Happy Mother's Day!

God blessed me with the tremendous gift of growing up in a close-knit, loving family. I am so grateful to have been given such wonderful parents. As we spend this week honoring the mothers in our lives, I am thrilled to share with you about my own mom – someone incredibly special! For my mom, raising a daughter with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) must have been incredibly challenging. It was certainly not the life she had expected before she found out I was born with SMA, a progressive neuromuscular disorder.

As an infant, my mom had to watch me go through grueling tests, until, at the age of 18 months, I was diagnosed with SMA. By the time I was in kindergarten, I couldn’t walk well enough to keep up with my peers and my parents, along with my doctors, decided it was time for my first power wheelchair. I often reflect on what those first few years must have been like for my mom… all the uncertainty and newness to contend with. But...
