For most of his life, my friend Daniel has dealt with a very significant disability as a result of a botched surgery. Although his heart and mind are sharp as tacks, he has great difficulty walking, using his hands, or even speaking.

But, boy, does Daniel love sports (he and my husband Ken still haven’t gotten over USC’s dismal football record in 2018). When Daniel goes to a game with his family, including little nephew Parker, everyone sits in the handicap section. But when they play the National Anthem and everyone stands to honor the flag? Daniel insists that he stand, too – and yes, small-sized Parker works to help support his Uncle Daniel, as well.

In a day and age when many people refuse to stand and salute the flag, I’m so grateful for one proud American with a disability named Daniel who doubles his effort to honor our flag!
