“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.”
In today’s Scripture, Paul writes, “Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Some people have waited many years to become citizens of the United States. As the days and months go by, they eagerly watch the mailbox for the envelope that will bring them the good news. The apostle Paul’s good news, however, is even better than that. He tells us we are already citizens of heaven. There will be no need to fill out application forms, go through interviews with angels, present our papers, or get into a long line when we reach the other side. We will already be citizens of the eternal kingdom. Our passport has been stamped with the blood of Jesus Christ, and the door to heaven will swing wide open for us. Or maybe Jesus Himself will come for us, meeting us in the clouds with the believers of all the ages (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).
Dear Lord, I love these thoughts beyond all others. Paul says we eagerly await our Savior from heaven, and my heart says, “Yes! Me too!” I am eager to watch and wait for Your return for me in the clouds. And if I die before that day, I’m eager to walk into Your presence and Your welcoming arms.
For the past twenty-five years, Heaven has inspired us to live well on earth even as we long for eternity.
Drawing on Scripture, Joni Eareckson Tada answers the deepest questions of our hearts about what heaven will be like, who we will see there, and who we will be there.
