“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
Think of the times when you’re nearing the end of a long, tiring trip. Maybe it’s a familiar freeway exit, with home just five minutes away. Maybe it’s the final approach to your hometown airport. Maybe it’s the last quarter mile of a backpacking trip, and your car waiting in the parking lot to return you to civilization—and a hot shower! Just knowing home is near can add a spring to your step and the stamina you need to keep going. So it is when we consider heaven. Every step, every day, every moment brings us closer. And just knowing our glorious home is near, right around the corner, gives us fresh courage to face the day. John 17 tells us that eternal life begins with the knowledge of God. So wherever you are in your journey, you can get a foretaste of heaven today by setting time aside to speak to Him and listen for His voice.
I think of those best-of-all words, “almost home!” What could be sweeter? Today, dear Jesus, I ask You to walk with me. You set the pace, and You lead the way. And if I begin to falter, remind me that heaven is near and that You are nearer still.
For the past twenty-five years, Heaven has inspired us to live well on earth even as we long for eternity.
Drawing on Scripture, Joni Eareckson Tada answers the deepest questions of our hearts about what heaven will be like, who we will see there, and who we will be there.
