A Mighty Promise
“Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.”
Isaiah 53:4
My friend Nancy just suffered through her 29th back surgery. She’s got degenerative disc disease and has had to have her spinal “hardware” replaced. For the most part, Nancy is bedridden. It’s why the picture of Jesus in Isaiah 53 is such a comfort to her: “Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering…he was stricken, smitten and afflicted.”
Nancy knows what it’s like to feel stricken and afflicted, but God has placed his mighty promises under and over her, inside of her and around her to uphold and strengthen her through every hardship. What’s more, Jesus has made her agony and groanings his own. Nancy tells me she can face anything, any pain, if she knows that Jesus Christ is with her, granting her the same grace that sustained him on his own cross. And what’s true for Nancy is true for you today.
