A Lowly Christmas
Glory to God in the highest and glory to God in the lowest!
Merry Christmas to you on this day like none other. Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and yes, we give glory to God in the lowest, because today we celebrate Jesus coming lowly and humbly to rescue us in our own humble estate, poor, miserable sinners that we are! Here is the one child born to die. We celebrate the child in the cradle who becomes the Christ on the cross.
And it is why I love this carol “What Child is This?” and especially listen to the words of this verse:
Why lies he in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spear shall pierce him through,
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
So, bring him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come peasant, king to own him;
The King of Kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone him.
Raise, raise a song on high,
The Virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
Oh, the light and the joy of Christmas is hollow if we sever the link between Bethlehem and Golgotha. Christmas is for you only because his life was for you, and his death was for you, and his triumphant resurrection on the other side was for you. Nails and spears piercing him through? That does not ruin Christmas. It gives our celebration today meaning. And it’s why we can say Merry Christmas! Oh, and you can download the entire song from my album at joniradio.org today.
