Say No to Yourself
“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality.”
1 Thessalonians 4:3
The Bible tells us to be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect (Matthew 5:48). But how do we do that? Is that an awfully high standard? Actually, with His help, it is doable. Today’s Scripture says to “avoid sexual immorality.” It doesn’t take much analysis. Just avoid it. If you want an expanded definition, it means “to keep away from, keep clear of, shun.” If you find yourself enticed by wrong desires, do something about it. Turn off the TV, make your exit from the movie, hang up the phone, cancel the subscription, switch off the computer, or even walk out of the room.
Remember Joseph? He ran, leaving his coat behind (Genesis 39:12). It is hard to do? Yes. Will God help you if you ask Him? Yes, again. To be honest, one of the most crucial priorities of our whole Christian life involves refusing to allow our desires and appetites to rule the day.
Father, even now, at this point in my life, I need to develop the habit of saying no to myself. No to the “semi-innocent” fantasies that tiptoe into my mind. No to the appetites that seek to rule me. The more I say no to the little things, the easier it will be to say no to the big temptations when they seem to rise up out of nowhere.
