World Down Syndrome Day

Tomorrow is World Down Syndrome Day, and we’re celebrating Rebecca, one of our special friends with Down syndrome.  Not very long ago, Rebecca was involved in an accident that left her with a spinal cord injury, adding a physical disability to her list of trials.

But Rebecca doesn’t let her wheelchair, her spinal cord injury, or Down syndrome get in the way of her positive outlook on life! Her mother Karen explains,

“Rebecca is always looking forward. She just has this amazing attitude that never looks back. Rebecca always seems to find something to look forward to.”

And on those days that are particularly challenging, Rebecca sings her favorite song from Finding Nemo. It’s called Just Keep Swimming and it holds a powerful reminder – when life gets you down, you know what you’ve got to do? Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming…

What exactly does that look like, if you’re not a fish, that is? Well, it looks like trusting that God’s plan for your life is a good plan (Jeremiah 29:11) and remembering that His ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:9). It means not becoming weary in doing good, knowing that at the proper time we’ll reap a harvest if we don’t give up (Galatians 6:9). And it means pressing on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called us heavenward in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14).

Rebecca doesn’t dwell on her injury or any diagnosis. She forgets what is behind and strains toward what’s ahead – strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. Hers is a beautiful example worth following, and it’s one that we celebrate in preperation for World Down Syndrome Day and every day!
