Joni shares her sister's famous roast leg of lamb recipe and wishes us all a blessed Good Friday.

Welcome to "Joni and Friends" and, like me, maybe this is your favorite season of the year. Christmas is wonderful, isn’t it … Pentecost Sunday is a great occasion to recognize… but celebrating the resurrection of Christ? It’s why I so love the season of Easter – just think of all the many benefits accrued to us when Jesus burst out of that tomb! But apart from the many wonderful spiritual reasons I love Easter, I also treasure some special memories when I lived with my sister Jay Kay on the farm in Maryland. For us, Easter always meant having the entire family over for her very famous roast leg of lamb. Never liked lamb before I lived on the farm with my sister, but Jay Kay was the one who turned me on to this incredibly savory meat… I just love it!
She had this great recipe –slivers of garlic in the meat before roasting, making certain to rub on lots of rosemary… don’t forget the lemon zest to make sure the rosemary sticks to the meat. But it can be a little difficult to enjoy lamb when you possess a true love and affection for those little guys. When I was on the farm growing up, I once helped take care of a lamb for my sister’s 4H Club. Cute, warm and fuzzy, that innocent little animal absolutely melted my heart. You can imagine my horror on the day when the 4H project ended, the Howard County Fair was over, and that little lamb was taken to the slaughter house! I was just a child, and somehow I guess I just missed that this was going to happen; maybe I just overlooked it, I don’t know, but for me it was upsetting. What a cruel thing to do to my friend the lamb!
Well, for Passover preparations, listen to what God had the Israelites do… it’s recorded in Exodus chapter 12 where Moses tells the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of a particular month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household… and then He writes, “The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the people of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.”
Now understand this. God wanted a family to choose a lamb, bring it into their house, and – as He put it -- take care of it for four whole days before killing it. Think about that -- they were required to slaughter what had become their household pet. But there was a reason. Such a heart-wrenching sacrifice demonstrated how awful sin really is. It was the perfect Old Testament type of our Savior, Jesus, “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” Crucifying the Son of God? What a cruel thing to do to our friend. We were the ones who put Jesus Christ to death. Our sin led him to the slaughter, and that, if anything, should lead us to grief and repentance.
