Lamplighter

Lamplighter lighting a lampDo you know what a lamplighter is? A long time ago, street lamps were more like candles. They had a little wick in oil and it was a lamplighter’s job to light each one! Every evening just as it was beginning to get dark, the lamplighter would walk down the street lighting each lamp individually. At each lamp pole, he would put up his ladder. He’d climb up and use the lantern he carried to light the lamp. Slowly he would go back and forth, back and forth across the street until all of the lamps were shining. The lamplighter might not hang around each lamp for long, but everyone knew where the lamplighter had been because of the light he left behind him. Did you know we are like lamplighters? As Christians, we can leave a trail of light wherever we go. Whenever we share the light of Jesus by caring for others, we are doing just what Matthew 5:14 says, “You are the light of the world; let your light shine before men that they might see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” As days get shorter and the street lamps start turning on earlier and earlier, remember to be a lamplighter for Jesus!
