God Sings

Hi, I’m Joni with a very happy Bible verse!

With great gladness, with much joy, Zephaniah Chapter 3, verse 17 says, “The Lord your God is with you; He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you; He will quiet you with his love; He will rejoice over you with singing.” Don’t you just love that last part? God rejoices over you; He sings over you.

I know that when my heart is restless and my soul feels downcast, I surround myself with calming strains of a favorite hymn. Sometimes when I want to express sheer praise, I’ll pick a happy psalm and just put it to any old tune that comes to mind. I sing to myself. I sing to God. But I’m astonished to think that God sings to me. God sings! No doubt He has invented chords and dis-chords, major and minor keys that our ears have yet to hear, and He uses every beautiful note to rejoice over you and me with an actual melody. What’s more, He quiets us with His loving song.

I have often thought of that when a beautiful hymn keeps rolling over and over in my mind. The tune lifts my spirit, carries me through the day. No, I’m not playing a broken record in my head. The song, I’m convinced, is God’s melody sent to me direct from His heart, and He is rejoicing over me with singing. Hallelujah! And all I need to do is listen and be inspired.

And I tell you one song that has inspired me ever since I first sang it in 2014: “Alone Yet Not Alone.” I sang it for the Christian movie of the same name. And guess what? I’d like to give you a copy of the movie if you go to joniandfriends.org/radio today and ask for the DVD, “Alone Yet Not Alone. We’ve got limited supplies, so please contact us today. Not only is it a powerful movie, the song is so powerful because the words seem straight from God’s lips. In fact, in a way the words are. Where in Hebrews we are told that with God, He will never forsake us; He will never leave us; we are not alone. God is Immanuel; God is with us—ever-present with us, and that’s what this beautiful song, “Alone Yet Not Alone, is all about. So, I often say to myself, Joni, you’re not alone; God is with you. You may feel out there by yourself, all alone, but you are not. And friend, it’s why I can sing.

I can feel His touch
A soothing presence by my side.
He has bound me with His love,
Watchful angels look from above.
Every evil can be braved,
For I know I will be saved.
Never frightened on my own,
I’m alone, yet not alone.

Put a song in my heart today, Jesus, a praise song that you are singing over me right now, amen.
