Giving Grace

What does it mean to give grace to others? Well, if you’ve ever bumped into someone unexpectedly, God may be calling you to show some grace.

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada with an encouraging reminder…

And the “reminder” is from Ephesians chapter 4, verse 29 where it says, let encouraging words proceed from your mouth, words that are “… good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear.” I love that scripture. It’s something that you and I can do every day—like, today even! Because before this day is done, an occasion is going to arise in your life that Ephesians chapter 4 defines as "the need of the moment." It will happen this way: Before you even got up this morning and got going out your front door, God already had someone in mind for you to touch today. God knows this person has some special need, a challenge, a difficulty, and he wants to pour out his grace on this person. And you know what? He has chosen you to serve as His conduit. He has chosen you to provide that word of encouragement that fits the need of that person’s moment. So what does He do next? Well, God crosses your paths. He puts the two of you together in a grocery check-out line, in an elevator, on a golf course, at choir rehearsal, in Chemistry class, or in the parking lot or at the ATM booth. And once He’s got you two together, God puts that Holy Spirit prompting in your heart to say something. Maybe whisper a prayer or even offer a scripture. He wants you to say a word of edification. He’ll nudge you, but what happens after that is up to you.

You have before you a "need of the moment." That is, someone God wants to reach with His grace. That same God desires to give divine help through you. Now you can choose to side step the moment and, thus, miss the opportunity, or you can give "such a word as is good for edification that it may give grace to those who hear."

O, friend, every day you and I have a chance—many chances—to nudge people closer to the Lord. To be one more stepping-stone in the many it will take to bring that person to Christ. You have a chance to extend the magnificent grace of God through what you say and do. You friend are a pipeline; you are an aqueduct through which He keeps meeting needs of the moment in the lives of others with His grace.

We can be in partnership with the Lord to reach those He has special designs on. We can fit into God's strategic plan to reach the people He wants to edify. Ephesians chapter 4, verse 29 says so. Your encouragement becomes the means by which the Lord bestows grace that is strengthening, enabling and empowering. This is the ministry God is going to call you to today. It’s everybody’s ministry but specifically, it is yours. So, friend, don't miss it. Sometime, before you lay your head on the pillow late tonight, God will position someone directly in front of you to directly benefit from your words. When the opportunity arises, don't forget to speak that word of grace. So ask the Lord to put you on alert and be ready to be used as a means of grace in the lives of others.

Hey, friend, I would love to hear stories about how you have given that timely word that fit the need of a moment in someone else’s life. So go on my radio page today at and let me hear from you. And if you’d like to encourage a friend today, hey, just click on the Facebook share button on the transcript for this radio program. Others need to know that their words count as well; they matter. Others need to know that they can be a stepping-stone in the life of someone else who needs to be drawn to Christ. It’s a good word to share with all your Facebook friends at
