Before the Throne of God Above

Do you have a favorite hymn? Hi, I'm Joni Eareckson Tada. One of my favorite hymns is “Before the Throne of God Above.” It comes from Hebrews chapter 4 where it says, “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Don’t you just love that idea, that we can approach God's throne with confidence… but not to first find help for all our needs; no, rather, we approach His throne of grace first to receive mercy. Mercy always comes first. We forget that, though. We tend to take way too much for granted, coming to God as though He were our personal butler, our spiritual vending machine. To fear; that is, to respect the Lord, is to first kneel before Him. Then we shall find grace to help in our time of need. Mercy, first; needs, second. It’s what happens before the throne of God above.
