Sweet Relief

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. Some of the most beautiful hymns are written by hymn writers who so suffered much. Like Anne Steele. She lost her mother when she was young and then at the age of 14, she began suffering from chronic malaria. All throughout her single life, she struggled with many health issues, and was bedridden for nine years before her death. During all this time, though, friends described her as cheerful and serene. You can tell that in these lines from one of her more famous hymns, “Dear refuge of my weary soul, On Thee when sorrows rise, On Thee, when waves of trouble roll, My fainting hope relies. To Thee I tell each rising grief, For Thou alone canst heal; Thy Word can bring a sweet relief for every pain I feel.” God gives us examples like Anne Steele to remind us that, yes, despite much suffering, God does sustain. And that’s true for your weary soul today.
