Out of Practice

Back when I was on my feet, I used to love jumping my horse, Tumbleweed.

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and back when I was on my feet, I used to love jumping my horse, Tumbleweed. One summer, we won blue ribbons at nearly all the major horse shows in Maryland. Tumbleweed was in top condition. But when I returned to school that fall, I put her out to pasture. After a month or so, I saddled her up for one more joy-ride before the snows came. After three fences, my horse was wheezing and lathered; she was completely out of training. It didn’t take long for Tumbleweed to lose her strength. I think of that whenever I read First Timothy chapter 4, where it says, “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” Oh friend, we really can lose our strength if we don’t stay in training. So train yourself in godliness and righteous living. It’ll benefit you now, and for all of eternity to come.
