My able-bodied friends look at me in my wheelchair and they often say, “You know… if I were paralyzed, I think the hardest thing would be always asking for help.” This is Joni Eareckson Tada, and I’m convinced that one of God’s primary reasons for permitting illness in our lives is to force us to ask for help. Nothing kills pride quicker – we are at the mercy of God as well as the mercy of others. Even Jesus in the garden asked His disciples for help. “Stay here and keep watch with me,” he said. If Jesus asked for help, shouldn’t we? Today you may be in a tough situation… you don’t want to bother anybody… you don’t want anyone in your church to know. Or maybe you’re caring for a loved one and you are plain worn out. Forget your pride, friend… ask for help.
