I'm Joni Eareckson Tada. I used to love going sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. When I was in my teens, my friend Paula and I would take her sailboat out on the water. One summer day, the wind took us pretty far south and getting home was no easy feat. It meant Paula had to tack into the wind – in other words, face the breeze head-on. It was hard work, but tacking was the only way to do it. This is a great picture for any Christian who is up against strong winds of adversity. James chapter 1 tells us to have confidence, courage and even joy, “whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.” Like tacking, facing a tough challenge head-on will be hard; it will take some skill; but it’s a testing of your confidence in the One who is Master of winds and waves. Something to remember if you’re facing a head wind today.
