I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. I have a sweet memory from Family Retreat when we held communion. Before the bread and juice were served, seven children came up to the front carrying seven candles — that was no easy feat considering that the kids all had disabilities: Tim and Julie who have Down syndrome and little Nicole in her wheelchair...It gripped the hearts of us all to watch Sabrina with cerebral palsy carry her candle. Here we were, getting ready to celebrate communion and the broken body of Christ… And attending the sacrament were these beautiful children in all of their brokenness. It was a powerful metaphor of how beautiful the body of Christ really is. Beauty shows up best in brokenness, and it's something we see all the time at Family Retreat.
