Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. The Old Testament book of Amos tells of a time when God was so exasperated with His people that He was ready to devastate their crops with a swarm of locusts! But just at the last minute, God seems to have a change of heart. Amos chapter 7 simply states, “So the Lord relented.” But how can the Lord “relent?” Well, like this: God displays different aspects of His character in response to human behavior. His wrath shows itself when people rebel, His kindness when they repent—kindness that He had all along. Now it may appear to us that He has relented, but He has not actually reconsidered the matter. The Bible only uses such words so that we might understand God as best as we can, using human language. So, thank God with me that He only 'borrows' human metaphors because He will never, ever change His mind about you or me.
