Hi, this is Joni Eareckson Tada. At one of our Family Retreats, we met six‑year‑old Jesus Barrera. This kid is so full of energy, yet he’s such a helpful son to his mother, Maria, who’s in a wheelchair. Jesus is only as tall as her armrest, but always helps push his mother's wheelchair, reaching items off the shelf, running to the mailbox, putting dishes away. A lot of 6 year olds would drag their feet over such chores, but this little boy understands how much his mother needs him. At Family Retreat, little Jesus sees that his mom isn't all that different and he connects with other children his age who help their family members. That’s what makes volunteering at a Family Retreat so special – it’s a chance to work with kids like Jesus whose little personalities can be tenderly shaped into true servants of Jesus Christ.
