I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. A lot of people struggle with depression – I know I have. And when you are depressed, it is so easy to listen to yourself recounting all the reasons why you feel so blue and so discouraged. But please don’t go down that road. It’s much better to talk to yourself, rather than listen to yourself. Leila began to see changes in her depression when she began using scriptures to instruct her heart rather than listen to her own sad feelings. She didn’t just read Scripture; she quoted it to herself, telling herself, much like the psalmist did, “Soul, why are you so downcast within me? Put your hope in God your Savior.” Depression can be a complex thing, but people can and do rise above it. So, follow Leila’s lead and start talking to your soul, giving yourself hopeful words from the Bible. Because you can do all things through Christ; yep you can, even getting out of depression.
