On the Couch

One night Ken and I rented a video and thought it would be neat for me to sit next to him on the couch.  After relaxing there for awhile, I was surprised how normal I felt.  I could imagine actually walking over to get my own Coke or grabbing the video controls or reaching for a magazine.  As I pictured myself doing these things, a thought struck me -- how easy it would be for me to get wrapped up in the little things of the here and now.  I realized I was grateful for my wheelchair… because, as the apostle Paul wrote, it keeps me leaning on God.  Someone once said that God's wisest saints are people who endure pain rather than try to escape it.  This is Joni reminding you that tough things happen that we might not rely on ourselves, but on God.  A wheelchair taught me that!
