Several years ago, I was in bed for a whole summer trying to heal a pressure sore.

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada.  Several years ago, I was in bed for a whole summer trying to heal a pressure sore.  The first month, there were cards and visitors.  But by the second and third month, I felt like the four walls in my room were closing in.  And I’m not the only one.  People unable to leave their home often lack any kind of companionship.  That’s why I like the story in Mark chapter 2 so much, it says, “Some men came, bringing to [Jesus] a paralytic…  Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on."  A ripped-up roof got Jesus' attention, but the friends -- their faith, and creativity, and commitment -- drew even more attention.  So today, remember: your commitment to a shut-in friend is far more remarkable to God than a ripped-up roof.
