Mother's Day
Close your eyes and think of a woman in your life who loves you and spends more time helping you than any other person. Who did you think of? I bet a lot of you thought of your mom. Maybe you thought of your grandma or foster mom? God puts special people like moms, grandmas, and foster moms in our lives to love and take care of us. This Sunday is Mother’s Day, and it’s the perfect chance to tell that important person how much you love her and are thankful for her! And we have the perfect activity to help you do that! Follow these instructions to make a special Mother’s Day gift.
Sticks and Stones
Have you ever heard the rhyme, “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me?” Well... the end should be re-written because words really can hurt! This month, the Kids’ Corner is focusing on “People First” language. People First language helps us focus on the person rather than their disability. The way we talk to and about people with disabilities is very important. Click here to download a fun activity where you can practice using People First language.

Continue to Full Post →Autism Awareness Month
April is Autism Awareness Month. Imagine your mom or dad talking to you, but you can’t understand what they’re saying. Or maybe you can understand them, but you can’t talk back. That’s what it’s like to have autism. Autism is a disorder that makes it hard to process what’s going on around you. Every second, our brain makes sense of the things we see, smell, touch, hear, and taste. But when the brain develops differently, it can have trouble realizing these things, making it hard to talk, listen, understand, learn, and play. That’s why people with autism might need extra help communicating, but that doesn’t mean anything is wrong with them! We each talk and understand things a little differently.

Did you know yesterday was Palm Sunday? You might have learned about it in Sunday school. On Palm Sunday, Christians celebrate Jesus coming to Jerusalem the week before he died on the cross. When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, huge crowds of people came to welcome Him. They were so excited to see Jesus; they waved palm branches and shouted “Hosanna,” which meant “save now.” Back in those days, palm branches represented goodness and victory, and were often on coins and important buildings. The people saw Jesus as a very important person, much like a president, who they hoped would overthrow the Romans. But we know that He came to save us from our sins by dying on the cross! Download this activity to make your own palm leaves!
Bible Reading Update
If you’ve been reading through the Bible with Joni this year, you’ve just finished the book of Numbers and are now reading Deuteronomy! Way to go! Did you know Moses wrote Deuteronomy? He wrote this book to remind the Israelites of what God had done for them in the past and what God expects of them in the future. In Exodus, God was faithful in helping the Israelites escape from Pharaoh in Egypt, and He took care of them in the wilderness. But in Deuteronomy, the Israelites forget about God’s faithfulness, and Moses has to remind them. Sometimes we can forget about God’s faithfulness in our own lives. But we have to remember, that even in the sad and hard times, God is right by our side and promises to always take care of us. And that’s something we should never forget! If you aren’t reading through the Bible with Joni yet, you can still join in. Or, you can keep up with the schedule by learning the Key Verses each week!
Heart for the Disabled Follow-Up
Do you remember when Joni invited you to write encouraging letters to families with special needs for Valentine’s Day? It was called “Heart for the Disabled.” Well, Jeremy and Justin couldn’t believe their eyes when a HUGE box of letters, gift cards, drawings, stuffed animals, and poems arrived just for them! Your special notes made them feel so special and loved. But do you know what the best part was? Jeremy and Justin were reminded of how much God loves and cares about them! “Joni and Friends loves us, but I know Jesus loves even more!” said Justin. From all of us at Joni and Friends, and especially from Jeremy and Justin, THANK YOU!
