Nick and JosephNick and Joseph on the waterslide

It’s volunteer Short Term Missionaries (STMs) that make Family Retreat a one-of-a-kind experience for families with special needs. And serving changes our STMs’ lives too! Meet college student and first-time STM Nick. The experience transformed his college plans, his future, and his heart forever. “Serving as a Short Term Missionary at Family Retreat has completely changed me,” Nick told us. “I wanted to learn how to serve God and other people – and it happened! My first week, I served Matthew, a boy with autism and Down syndrome. I built trust with his mom and dad, which gave them the chance to leave Matthew with me. They couldn’t remember the last time they had that chance. I really felt I had also ministered to them.” With new purpose, Nick signed on to serve for a second week at Family Retreat! Nick served 11-year-old Joseph and his parents, and they experienced a life changing week of sharing, learning, and growing in Christ. Nick and Joseph did it all – the water slide, wheelchair races, karaoke, swimming, rock-wall climbing. It was non-stop and power-packed. By week’s end, they were inseparable. Right along with all the fun, God was capturing Nick’s heart for disability ministry with each passing day. Family Retreat has opened my eyes. I love disability ministry. I have decided to base my college major in this area. It’s important for me to learn what God wants of me. I’m letting the Lord’s plans unravel in my life now instead of my own. The fellowship and love at Family Retreat is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I want to come back because it’s just natural to want to be with your family… and Family Retreat is my family!” Serving at Family Retreat, Nick discovered his highest purpose and heard God’s glorious call on his life.
