sungchil in her bed readingSungchil was a skilled pianist in Korea; she loved to perform and also gave lessons to students. Her husband, Moses, who had been a voice major at Yonsei University, often enjoyed singing when Sungchil would play (he was also a successful businessman in an export company). Then in 1989, a terrible automobile accident left her a quadriplegic; it also took the lives of their two children. Thankfully, Moses and Sungchil Park possessed a strong faith in Christ and, eventually, they established Shalom Disability Ministries for special-needs families in LA's Korean-American community. Although Sungchil has to lie in bed often because of pressure sore problems, she spends her time memorizing God's Word – she has the book of Psalms committed entirely to memory! This dear Christian is a huge inspiration to me… and I hope to you, too. If you have a minute, drop Sungchil a note at shalommin@hotmail.com. She truly reflects these words by an anonymous author, "Oh, the blessings of absolute submission to Christ! What a blessing to lose our own strength, wisdom, plans, and desires and to be where every ounce of our being becomes like a peaceful Sea of Galilee under the omnipotent feet of Jesus!. The main thing is to suffer without becoming discouraged."

Dear Sungchil, your memorization of the whole of Psalms is wonderful. I am have been reading through the bible for some years and so far I have memorized only Psalm 1 and parts of other Psalms. You are a great blessing and inspiration to believers like me. May the good Lord bless you and make you an inspiration to many who need to know Jesus Christ personally!!

Hello Sungchil! I just learned of your story today. I must say that I admire you tremendously! I was in an auto accident in May of 2011. It has left me permanently disabled too. I recently had surgery to alleviate some of the pain. It has been 2 months since my surgery. I have to say at this point I'm not sure that it has helped. I refuse to give up hope yet, but have to be honest and say my pain is still greatly debilitating and severe, but I can still get up and walk around. So I read of your story and am ashamed for feeling discouraged........ How do you do it? I too am a believer of Christ, but apparently my Faith isn't as strong as yours :) May God continue to bless you as you encourage and inspire others. I someday hope to be like you!!!!!

Dear Sungchil, My heart was so encouraged when I read about you and the great faith and trust you have in our Lord. In hearing about your commitment to reading God's word and memorizing scripture, I am inspired to be more committed to it. Thank you for your passion for the word.

What an amazing couple! Not only to survive such tragedy, but to use the experience to help others, and upbuild the Kindom of God. Those of us who are able-bodied should feel ashamed that we do not do more. May God bless Moses and Sungchil and their efforts to help others.

I am so sorry that you must lie in bed but you have so much music inside. Your story challenged me. I am a pianist who lost the use of my thumbs. I taught piano for close to 60 years. I had surgery on both but they don't have the strength or control to really play well any more. I kept teaching but it was difficult. I play the organ for church. We have to keep on. God loves us and has a job for us no matter our circumstances. I admire your stamina and endurance. I will keep you in my prayers. With love, Carolyn
