Serve as a Wheelchair Mechanic

Every year, hundreds of Wheels for the World volunteers join us around the world in providing wheelchairs to people with disabilities in need. Some are physical therapists, others occupational therapists… but not everyone on the team has a disability-related degree. Like Scott, an engineer who recently served with my husband Ken on a Wheels for the World provision in Peru. Scott’s experience working with system design and his problem-solving skills made him a wonderful wheelchair mechanic. With great attention to detail, Scott made sure every wheelchair he worked on perfectly accommodated the needs of the wheelchair recipient: whether it was installing a custom head support for a child with cerebral palsy or removing a footrest for an amputee. And by doing so, Scott was able to share the love of Jesus and the gift of mobility to people in need.

So, friend, can you turn a wrench? If you like working with tools or your middle name is MacGyver, you can be a wheelchair mechanic on a Wheels for the World team. Our physical therapists, occupational therapists, and wheelchair mechanics will provide you with the training; all it takes is a heart of service and some skills. Just check out this video to learn more, and then visit our Wheels for the World page to discover where God is calling you!
