Kay volunteering at Joni and FriendsKay Norris remembers when Joni and Friends was a tiny start-up ministry occupying two cramped offices in Van Nuys, California. The year was 1982 – the same year Kay began volunteering. “I realized right away that Joni was the beginning of a movement, a ministry that would change lives and change the world,” says Kay. “It’s a dynamic and loving ministry that has changed my own life just by being close to it.” Today, retired from her teaching career, Kay still faithfully arrives every Monday morning at the International Disability Center to volunteer in the place she loves so much. For 30 years she’s put her special touch on almost every department of the ministry, using her organizational skills to keep the wheels rolling smoothly. “Through my years at Joni and Friends, I’ve learned to love people because they are God’s creation. No matter how different we all are, each one is made in His image.” One of the most important ways Kay serves at Joni and Friends is through prayer. “When I pray for people with disabilities, I know I’m right where I’m supposed to be, doing what He wants me to do. Prayer not only changes circumstances, it changes me! I have grown so much through the years at Joni and Friends… loving people is the most important thing!”
