Hands

Have you ever experienced a time in your life when you needed someone to speak up on your behalf? Maybe in a time of turmoil you required another’s voice to make the right decision for you. Maybe you needed someone with authority to champion you and your position, or perhaps you found yourself in a situation that necessitated having a character witness testify in your favor.

At one time or another, we will all be faced with the very real need for an advocate. Be it in a courtroom, a hospital room, a board room, or a classroom – we will know firsthand, if we don’t already, the reality of needing someone to serve as our voice.

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs 31:8-9)

January 15, 2017 has been declared Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. It’s a day when we’re encouraged to remember that all souls are created equal, and all those countless souls require an advocate. It’s an opportunity for us to personally take on the challenge of Proverbs 31:8-9 and become that voice for the voiceless.

Babies being aborted due to genetic abnormalities, children locked away in back bedrooms because of their physical disabilities, teenagers and young adults suffering abuse at the hands of those taking advantage of their intellectual disabilities, senior citizens confused by dementia and neglected by those they love…The list goes on and on. Truly, there is no end to the very real needs surrounding us. Praise God, there is also no end to the very real call placed on our lives.

Christ has gifted us with the ability to make a difference in someone else’s life. He has given us a voice, and He is asking us to use it. To pray boldly, to judge fairly, and to defend courageously those who are powerless to defend themselves.

He has also given us the perfect example in Himself. Jesus Christ is forever at the right hand of God interceding for us, upholding our cause, and defending us when we – in our own power – are truly defenseless. What a Savior! How could we ever show our gratitude for His saving grace in our lives? By turning that blessing around, and by sharing it with someone else.

You won’t have to look far to find someone who’s waiting for you to come alongside their cause, and upholding the God-given sanctity of human life isn’t restricted to one day or week out of the year. Let’s encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today (see Hebrews 3:13). Let’s rally together and become a unified voice for the voiceless, and speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.
